ViPOR is an optimization model for designing village electrification systems.
Given a map of a village and some information about load sizes and equipment costs,
ViPOR decides which houses should be powered by isolated power systems (like solar home
systems) and which should be included in a centralized distribution grid. The distribution
grid is optimally designed with consideration of local terrain.
In the example shown below, ViPOR has chosen to include most of the village in
a distribution grid, and provide the others with solar home systems. Because it is more
expensive to run wires over the river than across open terrain, ViPOR has minimized
river crossings.
